Purcellville, VA- The CCBC Catonsville Cardinals notched their first victory of the season in dramatic fashion, edging Patrick Henry College 1-0 behind a strong defensive effort and a timely finish on Tuesday.
Freshman forward Niaya Gordon provided the difference-maker, scoring the lone goal of the match to put the Cardinals on top. Gordon was a constant threat throughout, firing a team-high eight shots and placing the pressure squarely on the Sentinels' back line.
Her goal was set up by Alexandra Wilson, who tallied the assist while also contributing five shots of her own, keeping the Cardinals' attack steady.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper Soleil Umbarger was lights out, stopping all eight shots she faced to record the shutout. Umbarger's composure in net was pivotal, especially down the stretch as the Sentinels pushed for an equalizer.
With the win, Catonsville improves to 1-1 on the season and will look to build momentum as conference play continues.
