Coach Saunders enters his first year as the Cardinal's Head Men's Soccer Coach after a year as an assitant during the 2016 season. Prior to joing the CCBC Catonsville staff he had recently finished up the inaugural season with the semi-pro team the Baltimore Kings as their goalkeeper coach, and also does GK training for several clubs in the Baltimore area. Phil plays goal for the Christos FC which most recently made a run beating several pro teams in the US Open Cup before falling in the fourth round to the DC United.
Before taking on the role with the Baltimore Kings, Phil played professionally for two years in the Icelandic First Division for Bi/Bolungarvik in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, before returning home to play a season for the Baltimore Blast in the 2014/2015 season.
Before his pro career, Phil played for UMBC. Phil is tied for 2nd most shutouts in program history, having made the All Rookie Team in 2009, named team MVP in 2012, the All-America East Team in 2012 and 2013, named most outstanding player in the America East Tournament in 2012, and captained the 5th nationally ranked team in 2013.
Before attending UMBC Phil played for the Baltimore Bays, winning a State, Regional, and the National Championship in 2011. He was also won the Golden Glove award for best keeper in the tournament, also being named for the National Best 11 Team. He attended Perry Hall High School, receiving All-County, All-Metro, and All-State honors as a Center Back in 2008. He was captain of the team in 2008 which reached the State Semi-Finals and was named team MVP.
